Name: Jaune Arc
Canon: RWBY
OU/AU/OC: OU
Canon Point:After Volume 2, Chapter 5, with all due spoiler warnings ETA for self reference, canon update to after episode 8 the end of Volume 2
History: Over here~
Personality: At first Jaune may look like a total fool. And to be honest... you'd be right. He's an idiot. He doesn't think things through, he's comic relief, he's the one that trips and makes everyone laugh. For crying out loud, this is someone who has honest-to-goodness footie pajamas, and "Left" and "Right" written on the bottoms of his sneakers. Jaune is the ridicule of everyone around him, and he's someone people laugh at rather than laugh with.
Except... he doesn't want to be. He's different from other comic relief characters in that he's NOT happy with his lot in life. Bad things happen to him, and he's generally unlucky and has a bad tendency to leap before he looks. But he has a burning desire to change it all, enough that he used whatever method he had (which turned out to be lying, but desperate men do desperate things) to get into a prestigious school so he could learn to be a true hero. Coming from a line of great warriors he feels he has a lot to grow into, and he's someone who's actually trying to do that. So he, too, can make a difference.
Besides the "save the world" stuff, Jaune is a good-hearted soul who's oddly adept at getting loyal friends. Though it couldn't be said he makes friends easily, the ones he does get generally see through the clumsiness to his genuine nature, and many want to do nothing but help him succeed at something he wants so badly; even one world-renowned warrior offers to help train him regularly so he can get to the same fighting level as everyone else. For his part, Jaune can be a bit crass and might otherwise have trouble keeping friends, but if he's being stupid at any given moment just give him time, he'll come around.
This isn't to say he's not formidable though. Jaune is almost the very definition of untapped potential. He's able to fight with a routine sword and shield in a world where every other weapon is a blade AND a gun, and he shows a fledgling talent for coming up with winning battle strategies on the fly. Aside from that he has quite a lot of Aura-- RWBY's protective magic generated in the souls of people and animals --and even though his talent with it is unrefined and untrained, it's been enough to completely heal minor injuries without any conscious input of his. Whatever this amounts to hasn't come to light yet, but the point of the matter is, Jaune may just become the hero he wants to be someday. He has some issues with not telling people things they need to know (such as when he had a big bully issue and tried to shoulder it himself), but he was made leader of his team by the headmaster for a reason. And that reason may just be that he'll go places one day.
He's also not half bad at guitar.
Strengths: Rudimentary healing ability (minor cuts and scrapes will, after a short period, disappear). Tactical battle planningto a degree. Good with a blade, adequate with a shield. Diehard to a fault. Thinks more of his friends than himself.
Weaknesses: Clumsy. Takes big leaps before he thinks things through. Can be somewhat secretive. Outclassed in battles that are more than one on one. Easy to be bullied (up to a point). Thinks more of his friends than himself. Airsickness.
Possessions: Crocea Mors, blue bunny slippers, a guitar, his scroll (a collapsible tablet).
Pony/Animal Type: Earth Pony
Cutie Mark: A golden double arc. Also visible here.
Pony Picture: Right here.
SAMPLES
First Person:
[The scroll shows a single blue eye, blinking and then flicking around as if trying to search its depths. A pony nose- also blue -that sniffs it twice, briefly making it wrinkle to judge by the sound that came through. Then the owner of the face draws back, flicking his head to shift pieces of his blonde mane out of his eyes.
When that didn't work he huffed- and you could see the ping in his face -then made a point of exhaling upward, fluttering the forelock out of the way. A self-satisfied grin, and then he went back to poking at the scroll.
Literally. Hope you guys like an extraordinarily close view of his hoofdoes that horseshoe say... 'left' on it??.]
Huh, this thing is weird. It's like a scroll but it's... not. [Hoof moves, and the pony tilts his head.] Well it's a scroll but like, proto model. Never seen paper do that though.
Weird... [One more close-up view of his face, and then something about the scroll blipped (a voice, maybe) and startles him, throwing him back with a distressed whinny. A brief view to show he's in armor of some kind and then he keels over backward, rearing too far and overbalancing. A loud "OOF!" and nothing but all four of his hooves up in the air.]
Oww...
Third Person:
Okay. He could do this. He knew he could do this. He was Jaune Arc, leader extraordinaire of Team JNPR!
Okay, so maybe extraordinaire was a little too far, but he was still the leader darnit. And he'd already gotten a hold of the walking-with-four-feet thing, and figured out the magical scroll. So now there was just one thing to do.
Jaune was perhaps unusual in some ponies, in that he walked around with a sheathed sword at his side. To date however he hadn't figured out how to use it without hands, but that ended now.
He braced himself, pawing at the dirt and staring down the tall bundle of wheat he had chosen as his opponent. With a pony-like snort he reached his head around and grasped the hilt of his sword in his teeth, pulling back. As perhaps expected, the length of the sword was greater than his draw ability and it stuttered in the sheath, requiring him to wrench a hoof back and bop it out the rest of the way.
Unfortunately this activated the expansion of the sheath, snapping open into shield mode and flicking off his body with such suddenness that he dropped his sword and skittered backward with a cry to avoid the shield. Standing several feet left of where he started, he stuck out his bottom lip and looked over at his target.
His woefully untouched target.
For just a moment he despaired, hanging his head. He'd been out here most of the morning, and all he had to show for it was a dirty shield. If only Pyrrha were here, she'd probably know exactly how to use her... spear.. gun thing. Man everything back home was a gun, except his weapon. Then again, guess that paid off here huh? If only he could draw it.
With a blink, Jaune lifted his head and looked at the shield. And the sword nearby. And back at the shield, which the sword was sitting separate from. He had drawn it! Not exactly the way he'd intended it, but he had drawn it. With renewed confidence he strolled over and tapped the shield with his hoof, returning it to sheath mode. Picking up the sword in his mouth, he turned toward his target and braced his hooves. Next step, actually swinging it.
He'd show them. A world away he could practically hear Team CRDL laughing at him. But he'd do this, and then he'd do the next thing, and he'd go home a hero. This place won't be another failing for Jaune Arc.
He'd show them all.
